Thankful Thursday #6

I am thankful for my bed. I may have written about my bed before, but I am really thankful for it. It’s so comfy. It’s especially nice to have a comfy bed when I’m not feeling my best. So, if you read my post from very early this morning. I didn’t end up going to bed until after 4am. With a toddler there isn’t much hope that I’ll get to sleep in after that. But I did! I put on Mickey Mouse Christmas and got some much needed sleep.

I guess I am also thankful for Mickey Mouse Christmas for keeping my kid entertained so I could sleep. Also, indoor plumbing. So thankful for indoor plumbing. What did women do when they had bladder infections before they had a bathroom in their house? Can you imagine having a bladder infection and having to use an outhouse? Eww!!! I bet using an outhouse didn’t speed along the healing process from an infection and probably made it worse.

So while it may not be a long list that I’m thankful for today, they are both important to me. I am feeling slightly better than I was from my earlier post. We were able to go to Hobby Lobby and get some stuff to decorate some ornaments later. I wanted to go yesterday but I felt too sick. Having the energy to go to the store was quite an ordeal for me. Sometimes it takes all my energy to just get out of bed. But like I said, I really really like my bed!

Thankful Thursday #5

This week, and pretty much every other week, I am beyond thankful for books. I love to read. I go through spurts where I will read between 3-5 books a week and sometimes I go months without reading. As my daughter is a busy bee it is hard to find time to read. I’m thankful that I do find the time to read, even though I have to take a lot of breaks to keep my child alive really.

I read a variety of topics. I love biographies, history (specifically about the Civil War, anything about WWII), I love drama, contemporary, humor, romance (every lady needs a little smut), educational (specifically about mental illness), and devotionals. I love a good escape, or a book that inspires me to live a better life.

The world would be lost without books. The world needs readers. I love the quote that refers to something like “you can live a 1000 lives by reading.” I might be way off, but it’s the basic idea. May not seem like much, but I am extremely thankful for books and the opportunities I get to read.

Thankful Thursday – Thanksgiving 2015

Happy Thanksgiving! I can’t believe it is already Thanksgiving. This month has been very hectic for us and I feel like 2015 has flown by. I feel like my mind has been all over the place and I’m grateful for this holiday to slow everything down.

We are spending the actual holiday with my in-laws because my dad is out of the country. We will celebrate with my family on Saturday. This is my first Thanksgiving not spent with my family. It makes me sad. I like things to be a certain way. I like to know what I can expect. I like tradition.

While I am sad about not spending the holiday with my family; I am grateful that I get to have 2 Thanksgivings this year. I’m grateful that my daughter gets to see both sides of her relatives for the holidays. I’m grateful that I have never had to worry about going hungry. I’m thankful that I’ve never had to worry about not having shelter at night. I’m beyond thankful that I have a family that could help me out if food or shelter were ever a concern.

I’m thankful for my freedom. On so many levels. We are all so lucky that we basically get to live our lives the way we choose. I’m thankful for a holiday that helps us focus on what the good things in our lives. Hope everyone has a great and safe holiday.

Thankful Thursday #3

I do love all of those things. I love food. I love cats. I LOVE cats. I love my friends.

I’m thankful for having my BFF of 14 plus years living 2 minutes away from me (in traffic). We have known each other since we were 14 or 15 and met at camp. Then we went to rival high schools and shared mutual friends. We were roommates our freshman year of college. She’s one of those friends that you can pick up right where you left off, even after not speaking or seeing each other for 6 months. Well, 5 years ago we reconnected after a few months of not speaking. Randomly, we both live in the same neighborhood. Fate. Destiny. Whatever; it makes me beyond thrilled to have a friend who is more like a sister this close to me. Our relationship is just easy. She gets me. I get her. There’s no pressure. She’s been there for me in my darkest times and is a HUGE part of pulling me out of some of my deepest depressions. She’s the kind of friend that I don’t think many people are lucky enough to find in their lifetime. And I found her! Female soulmate! She also loves cats just as much as I do!

While she got her cattoo with another one of her best friends, we both ended up with cat tattoos on our left forearms. That’s pretty stellar. Also, she looks like Gwen Stefani with dark hair, so that’s pretty cool. She’s outgoing to my shy. She makes me feel strong and helps me get out of my comfort zone without being pushy. Having the quality of friendship that we have is the most amazing feeling in the world.

I also have other very close and amazing girlfriends. So I’m thankful for my female friendships. I didn’t always appreciate them. There is all this pressure to compete with other women. We are conditioned to think that everyone is our competition. I don’t think I started fully appreciating how wonderful it is to have quality women in my life until I became a mother. They fill parts of me the way a man never could. I’d be lost without my girlfriends. I have some that I’ve known since middle school and we get together for birthdays and Christmas.

I have one of my best friends that I met in an Addictions class. That also felt like destiny. Girl gets me. We can say morbid things and just laugh. We can call each other on our BS and I don’t usually get mad. She spends the night at my house sometimes, so has seen me at my worst and still loves me. She deserves an award for that. My daughter loves her and she loves my kiddo right back. She is thoughtful and is always there for any of her friends, taking care of us. She lets me be moody and I let her be moody, but we also can tell each other when we are being awful. Every girl needs a friendship in their lives where they can call you on your stuff.

These are the kind of friends I have. These make the best kind of friends!

I also have one of my dearest friends at my current job. She’s so classy and reserved compared to my nonexistent filter. She has amazing insight and is so thoughtful with everything she says. I admire that. I love that we aren’t just co-workers, but friends. When you love the people you work with, it makes the job that much better. Even on the days I don’t want to go to work, knowing that I have one of my favorite people there makes it worth going in. It makes a difficult job do-able when someone gets it. And she’s safe. Easy to talk to, to confide in, supportive. She’s one of those types of friends that makes you want to be the best version of yourself. She’s another rare find.

Yes, today I am beyond thankful for my female friends in my life. I may not always say it, but I treasure each and every one of you. They each fill a piece of my life that would be missing without them. Having strong girlfriends make marriage, and motherhood more fulfilling. I didn’t ever think I would be so grateful for girls in my life, which is funny since now I don’t know how I would live without them. I hope everyone gets to have at least one of the types of girlfriends that I have. I may not have a lot of friends, but I have the best of them.

Thankful Thursday #2

(PC: The Berry)

Today I am especially thankful for having both sides of our family living close to us. We have an entire household that either has the stomach flu or food poisoning. We were able to call my sister-in-law up and she came over to help take care of the little rascal while we are resting. She also brought some ginger ale, anti-nausea medicine, crackers and Pedialite. So thoughtful.

That is not our only benefit. We are fortunate to be able to see both sides of our families for the holidays. My daughter gets to grow up knowing both sets of grandparents and cousins. We don’t have a lot of expensive holiday travel to see our loved ones. I might have mentioned this before, but we also get free childcare. My mom keeps my mini me safe, I will never be able to express my gratitude for the peace of mind. Knowing my child is in amazing hands while I’m at work is a blessing.

This time of year it can be easy to get caught up in the holiday hype. It’s also easy  to reflect on all the things we are already blessed with. With my job, I work with people who are chronically mentally ill, homeless, have addiction issues and/or have limited to no support systems. I am so grateful to have shelter, enough food, loved ones and stability in my life.

I may start posting a Thankful Thursday every Thursday instead of just in November. I want to focus more on the positives in my life. If you’d like to share what your grateful for I’d always love to hear what makes other people happy, fulfilled and feeling blessed.
